MITAKA Mitaka city is a district just west of Tokyo. It's most famous for the Ghibli museum situated there. Pictured is the Ghibli bus, which runs between the station and the museum. Footpaths can be insanely narrow to non-existent in some parts of Japan, but here in Mitaka, they're not only wide, but clearly demarcated out in green. Nice. This is the Toho bakery, just a little ways down from the Ghibli museum. They have all sorts of goodies here, including... ...Melon-pan. Each lampost along the main street has a plate bearing a poem. Contrary to what you might expect, you can't buy tickets to the museum at the actual museum. You've got to buy them at the Lawsons (they're a big convenience store chain) across the road. This particular Lawsons had a bunch of Ghibli merchandise for sale too. This is the actual museum. You can't take pictures inside, so here's one from the outside. A replica of one of the giant robots from Laputa can be found on the roof.
KOGANEI The Gainax building is located in Koganei, not too far past Mitaka. Unfortunately, it's just a dull office building. The area around the building is pretty industrial, which might have contributed to the art direction in some of Anno's work.
