It&#8217;s hard to tell whether this town is becoming more or less respectable.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04426.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nThis particular idol unit takes after the AKB48 model by holding live performances on the main street every once in a while. It seems the best way to fans&#8217; pockets these days is to appear accessible.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04431.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nThis truck could be seen driving around Akihabara day and night. Where do eroge companies get the budget for this kind of thing?<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0348.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0351.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nOne of the numerous shops in the Radio Kaikan building which does nothing except rent display cases for people to sell (or just show off) their stuff. There&#8217;s some amazing one-of-a-kind stuff here, including handpainted garage kits and modified figures.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0355.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nFirst, we had itasha. Then we had model car itasha. Now we have the next stage &#8211; model ita-battleships.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0534.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nMiracle Battle Carddass. That second &#8216;d&#8217; is crucial.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0451.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nFeaturing such hilarious quips as &#8216;If I die, I can be replaced&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0357.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nAn incredible alcoholic dessert shake crafted for me right before my eyes by one of the maids at Little BSD.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0362.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nAn exhibit of <I>Touhou<\/I> dolls at Mandarake.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0472.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nFrom the author of <I>Genshiken<\/I>, a familiar story about a galaxy far, far away.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0441.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nKadokawa held an event in Akihabara just to announce the re-serialisation of <I>Suzumiya Haruhi<\/I>. After four whole years, it&#8217;s hard to imagine it living up to expectations.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0305.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nA pre-Comiket festival held by a number of eroge and goods companies at Akihabara&#8217;s UDX. The goods were nothing special, but there was a great gallery of art used in eroge advertisements.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0288.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0261.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nI spent Christmas eve at Mogra, a bar located in one of Akihabara&#8217;s backstreet basements. The crowd drank and played an eroge together until dawn, with each choice being decided by majority vote and a running commentary from an MC panel which included one of the game&#8217;s developers.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04471.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nNew year&#8217;s day at Kanda Myoujin, a shrine not far from Akihabara. The racks are already thick with otaku <I>emas<\/I>.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04473.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n&#8216;Invasion successful&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04474.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n&#8216;I want a Gundam!&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04478.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n&#8216;I don&#8217;t want to die&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04484.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n&#8216;May something be done about that one regulation&#8217; <\/p>\n<p>\n[The recently passed Bill 156 concerning the designation of harmful reading materials.]<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05038.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nGamebar A-button is tucked away in one of the back streets of Akihabara. The interior is covered with obscure gaming memorabilia, and they have a bunch of neat consoles (from retro to new) which you can play while drinking. <\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0525.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05042.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05044.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05046.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05039.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nNext to the door is an impressive display board with all kinds of signed memorabilia.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05050.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nThe barkeep is in possession of some rather unique drinks, including this beer brewed by ZUN.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0547.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nA sampling from the Mister Donut in Akihabara. The bear comes recommended.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Jinbouchou<\/h2>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05144.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05146.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nThis unassuming building houses the Yoshihiro Yonezawa Memorial Library, which holds a copy of every doujinshi ever submitted for publication at Comiket. For a nominal fee, members of the general public can view any book from its archives.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05147.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05148.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05149.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05150.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05151.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nYonezawa, a respected manga critic and the founder of Comiket, passed away in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05154.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nThe bottom floor of the library contains a number of display cases showing not only the history of Comiket (including a near-complete collection of Comiket catalogues), but also a selection of manga-related literature throughout the past few decades.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Nakano<\/h2>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04430.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nUfotable&#8217;s cafe in Nakano, just down the road from Nakano Broadway.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0314.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0317.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0324.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0326.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nThe cafe is known for having various events and promotions related to ufotable&#8217;s shows throughout the year. At the time I went, they had an exhibition of art from Type Moon&#8217;s work, including Kara no Kyoukai, a few of their upcoming games and the new Fate Zero TV series.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0309.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nThe special menu ties in with the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0329.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nType-Moon Jya-jya-men.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0331.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nExcalibur drink.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0334.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nKokutou Florin.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Akasaka<\/h2>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05000.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05001.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05003.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nKonami has a store in the super swanky Tokyo Midtown building in Akasaka.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05004.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05005.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0504.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<I>Love Plus<\/I> pins for every region of Japan, each featuring local costumes.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0507.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nYou can take one of these ladies home for around 10,000 yen.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0515.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nBuy all three, and you get an extra piece that turns Manaka into Shiori from <I>Tokimemo<\/I>.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/IMG_0510.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<I>Love Plus<\/I> Chanmery. It&#8217;s also a lot smaller than on the show.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Sumida<\/h2>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05130.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05135.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nThe Tokyo Sky Tree is set to take over Tokyo Tower&#8217;s broadcasting duties within the next few years. There was quite a crowd gathered outside the construction site to get a picture of it while it&#8217;s still under construction.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC05138.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nThe monument outside the Asahi building in Sumida, popularly known as the &#8216;golden turd&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Chiba<\/h2>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04970.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04971.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nThe Makuhari Messe is a convention centre in Chiba for various large events (including, for a time, Comiket).<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04996.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04972.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04978.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nNintendo&#8217;s public demonstration for the 3DS happened to be on during the time I was in town. The technology is impressive, but undeniably gimmicky in that it doesn&#8217;t add much to the games themselves. Eyestrain is a very real issue too, kicking in after only about 10 minutes of continued viewing. Fortunately, there&#8217;s a switch which lets you turn the 3D down or off completely.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img src=\"\/2010\/DSC04980.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>\nThe augmented reality tech demo.
